Avoiding illness through poor hygiene significantly reduces your chances of surviving a disaster. It is widely known that the proper hygiene reduces probability of being infected by unwanted bacteria and virus. Having thorough hygiene in the recovery period after a disaster is paramount element in your personal survival skills set. It does not take much. Simple antibacterial hand wipes go a long way.

The leading cause of death in a catastrophe, it is not the disaster itself, but deaths from illnesses contracted during the period directly after and during the clean-up of the disaster. Public infrastructure, hospitals, sewage, water, electricity, rubbish collections are likely to be damaged by a major catastrophe.

With the damaged infrastructure, there is significantly increased risk of spreading of deadly bacteria and viruses.
